Jugglers + A Groundhog + Food + Fun

Q: What's a fun, unusual, and free event I can take my family to next weekend in Atlanta?

A: The 35th annual Atlanta Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival, held Feb. 1-3 at the Yaarab Shrine Center.

This unusual gathering will feature performances from jugglers, unicyclists, and hula-hoopers. You can watch experts perform for free during the day on Saturday and Sunday, or purchase tickets ($5 per person) for the late-night cabaret on Saturday evening (if you aren't juggled-out by then).

Live music from The Seed & Feed Marching Abominable, a community marching band with colorful costumes and a flavor of excitement and musical pageantry, will set the tone for the festival's juggling competition at 2pm on Saturday. The competition lasts about an hour and ends with the judges awarding groundhog-themed trophies to winners.

If watching the juggling acts doesn't provide enough excitement for you or your family , there will be juggling workshops taught by professionals for those who want to learn. The 3-ball beginner's juggling class is scheduled for Saturday at 4pm. A beginning hula-hooper class will take place on Saturday at 8pm. A number of other workshops are listed on the event website for those with a bit more experience. Festival attendees can also stop by the welcome table at any time to request a free, personalized juggling lesson–a great opportunity for anyone wanting to sharpen their skills.

Are you or your family members into sports, but want to see something other than televised basketball and football? Step outside on Saturday and/or Sunday (weather permitting) and watch a unicycle polo game in the Yaarab Shrine Center parking lot.

Visit the festival on Saturday at 9pm for the Light Extravaganza. Jugglers and other performers will bring lighted props and perform outdoors before the late-night cabaret begins at 10pm.

Specifically for youngsters, the festival will provide a children's area where kids can try stilt-walking and other fun skills.

The Atlanta Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival hours will be Fri., Feb. 1 from 5-10pm; Sat., Feb. 2 from 10am-10pm; and Sun., Feb. 3 from 11am-5pm. The Yaarab Shrine Center Recreation Building is located at 400 Ponce de Leon Ave. (near the intersection of Ponce de Leon Ave. and Hunt St.) in Atlanta. For specific directions and more information, visit the festival website

From juggling lessons to light shows to colorfully costumed performers, this festival surely has something for everyone and offers a great remedy for boredom on a winter weekend in Atlanta.
